Introduction

EvoEats Revelation is a speculative design project that examines the ethical, ecological and cultural crises embedded in contemporary meat consumption through a dystopian future narrative. Set within a post-apocalyptic scenario shaped by climate collapse, the project interrogates how food systems, belief structures and survival instincts may be reconfigured under extreme conditions. The work was presented as part of the showreels at BBC Television Centre in 2024.

Concept

Meat, though central to human diets through history, embodies tensions between cultural norms and ecological fragility. This project proposes a speculative ecosystem in which evolved biological traits and future dietary shifts become survival strategies under extreme climate conditions. It challenges the binary between nature and culture, food and being, by using evolutionary biology as a lens to rethink adaptation, value and care in a destabilized world.

Challenge

Contemporary dialogues around meat often reduce the crisis to binary debates of ethics or sustainability. However, the underlying systems shaping production, consumption and social beliefs remain largely unquestioned. This project confronts three interconnected challenges:

1 . How to represent without didacticism?

2. How to use speculative scenarios to surface cultural assumptions?

3. How to engage audiences in reflection rather than passive observation?

Process

To address these intertwined challenges, the project adopts three interconnected design strategies. Each strategy operates at a different scale, forming a speculative system that bridges biological adaptation, global belief formation and embodied experience.

1. Virtual Environment

A virtual post-apocalyptic environment translates abstract systems into lived experience. Fragmented narratives and environmental cues invite audiences to actively assemble meaning through exploration and interpretation.

2. Biological Adaptation

The project speculates on future dietary systems by translating evolved goat organs into adaptive survival resources. Based on the principle of “form nourishes form,” food is positioned as a medium through which evolutionary traits and survival capabilities are transferred.

3. Future News

To support audience understanding of the future world, a news-style trailer was produced as a narrative entry point. Key visuals and animated sequences were generated through AI-assisted processes, accompanied by synthetic broadcast narration. These fragmented news elements were distributed throughout the virtual environment, allowing audiences to uncover background events and reconstruct the truth through exploration.

3. Global Initiative

A speculative global initiative is proposed to address ecological collapse through shared governance and belief restructuring. Declarations and legal frameworks are imagined as tools to reshape consumption habits and reframe humanity’s relationship with non-human life.

Reflection
The exhibition highlighted limitations in its interactive structure. While the fragmented narrative encouraged active interpretation, audiences were restricted to assembling meaning from partial information within a single ecological scenario. This constrained the depth of engagement across different environmental conditions and future trajectories. Future iterations could strengthen narrative comprehension by introducing layered interactions that connect physical exhibition elements with corresponding VR content. By allowing audiences to explore physical space while simultaneously accessing parallel future narratives, the experience could evolve into a more game-like system, supporting clearer causal relationships and a deeper understanding of the speculative world.
